Certain swimming pool water tests, like pH and chlorine, need to be performed every week while other tests, like calcium and alkalinity, only need to be performed every month. Every swimming pool owner should have a pH and chlorine test kit handy. We prefer the kits that use the tablets as the readings are much more accurate, however, the test kits that use drops are fine for average readings.
When testing your pool water, there are a few simple rules you must follow. First, always take water from the farthest below the surface you can reach. Second, rinse the kit thoroughly with pool water before performing a test. Finally, never empty the test solution into the swimming pool. Remember, pH and chlorine should be tested every week.
The monthly tests include testing for calcium hardness, total dissolved solids, and total alkalinity. There are tests on the market that check for these but they are often very inaccurate and expensive.
